Sights and Activities
Nestling between the Dordogne and the Monts du Cantal,
Pleaux is a small market town situated some 5 hours
south of Paris. The town has some fine Medieval buildings,
a good range of shops and bars, medical facilities and
a pharmacy. There is also a very helpful Tourist Information
Office, equipped to help you discover this wonderful
but secret part of France.
Situated in the centre of Pleaux, Les Ombrages is ideally
placed for those wishing to explore the town or use
the extensive leisure facilities, without having to
drive.
Tennis, pétanque and mini-golf are all available
within 5 minutes easy walking distance of Les Ombrages,
as is the large open air swimming pool, which is open
in July and August. The pool has a separate paddling
area for non-swimmers and is supervised. |
|
For watersports enthusiasts, the immediate proximity
of Lac Enchanet (around 15 minutes relaxed drive from
Les Ombrages) as well as the rivers Maronne and Dordogne
gives easy access to trout & coarse fishing, sailing,
swimming and canoeing.
Horse riders are also well catered for with two local
“Classical” riding schools, plus the very
well reputed “Western” stable – ‘Elevage
du Sagiran’ , www.sagiran.net
Organised childrens activities are run by Pleaux throughout
July and August allowing parents to go off and explore
whilst the younger family members are occupied, and
there are local fetes and events throughout the year.
There is a fortnightly street market (normally on 13th
and 27th of each month) where stalls sell local honey,
fish, vegetables, livestock, cheese and charcuterie,
as well as furniture, clothing and wine.
The countryside around Pleaux has a number of well
marked cycle, mountain bike (VTT) and walking routes
of varying difficulty, and the woods, paths and country
roads that criss-cross the area allow the more adventurous
to make their own discoveries. |
|
| Sightseers will not be disappointed. Short car journeys
take you to numerous castles and chateaux, the famous
Route de Fromages, Puy Mary, Salers, The Dordogne, Auvergnes
spectacular Volcanic Parcs and Aurillac—home of
the annual Festival International de Theatre de Rue. |
|
 |
Finally, in winter, a full range of alpine sports is
just over 1 hours drive away, including cross country
and downhill skiing, paragliding, tobogganing and quadbiking.
Ski and equipment hire facilities are available in resort. |
